In a significant move, the Chief Justice of Akwa Ibom State, Justice Ekaete Obot, has ordered the release of 44 inmates across correctional facilities in the three senatorial districts of the state. Among those set free were two females.
During her 2024 first inspection visit to the correctional centers in the state, Justice Obot meticulously reviewed the case files. She observed that most of the beneficiaries had committed minor offenses and had been held in custody for an extended period without trial. These minor offenses ranged from stealing palm fruits and cassava to assault, beating, and fighting. The Chief Judge emphasized that their prolonged detention was already sufficient punishment for these minor transgressions.
Among the released inmates was 28-year-old Shadrach Hanson, who had spent over a year in custody for stealing his mother’s cooking pot. Justice Obot deemed this offense as insufficient to warrant such a lengthy detention and ordered his unconditional release. She also highlighted the importance of reformation and rehabilitation, urging the State Controller of Corrections to provide skill acquisitions and education opportunities for the inmates. Additionally, she called for the establishment of schools within the correctional centers to ensure a better future for those within the teenage age range or young adults.
This compassionate decision by the Chief Justice reflects a commitment to justice tempered with humanity, recognizing that excessive punishment for minor offenses does not serve the interests of society. It also underscores the need for continued efforts to decongest correctional facilities and promote rehabilitation for those in custody.
