The Holy Scripture lays emphasis on the role of women as daughters, mothers and wives. God in His infinite wisdom created a woman to be an agent of positive transformation in the society as a daughter who make her parents proud, as virtuous wife whose husband delights in her and as a mother.

The role of a mother and wife is a socially strategic one. A good wife ensures she provides the much-needed moral, spiritual and psychological support to her husband to succeed while her role as a mother to her own children and others who look up to her as a mother is relevant in bringing good and successful children.

The divinely ordained role of a woman as a wife and mother is one in which Mrs. Eunice Ortom, the First Lady of Benue State is shouldering with grace, elegance, love and kindness. The wife of the State Governor since the inception of her husband’s administration in 2015 has redefined the conventional Office of the First Lady. Mrs. Enice Ortom, has in her usual humane manner helped elevate the status of the First lady to one that is devoid of the paraphernalia of such office by making it accessible to people from all walks of life especially the less privilege.

Through the Eunice Spring of Life Foundation, ESLF her NGO, Mrs. Ortom has helped empowered thousands of youths through the Foundation’s thematic areas of health, education and agriculture as well as women and youth empowerment in Benue State over the years. It is to the credit of the tireless humanitarian icon and philanthropist that today thousands of Benue youth have been educated, many have been equipped with vocation skills that have made them self-employed. In the area of health, the ESLF has intervene through various health outreaches.

The recent medical outreach by the ESLF in partnership with Benue State Emergency Management Agency, SEMA is one of its kind in the northcentral geo-political zone. The ambitious free medical outreach designed to provide free medical services to Internally Displaced Persons, IDPs spread across five IDP camps win Benue which include, Gbajimba, Uikpam, Daudu, Abagena in Guma LGA and Obagaji in Agatu Local government was a resounding success as thousands of people with medical challenges with some life-threatening conditions were successfully treated free of charge.

Mrs. Eunice Ortom’s kind spirited gestures in being a source of inspiration, motivation and social-economic support to the socially disadvantaged has continued to received acknowledgement from individuals and organizations. It is based on this recognition that the National Council for Women Societies (NCWS) on the 23rd of September, 2021 honoured the First Lady with an “Award of Excellence for the immense contributions towards the Development of Women and Youth”. The National President of NCWS Dr. Gloria Shoda while presenting the award to the Benue State First commended the enormous contributions of Dr. Eunice Ortom towards the empowerment of women and youth across the State.

This Award coming from a reputable organization such as the NCWS that have being at the forefront of women empowerment is well deserved. The Award would help boost the morale of the First Lady and her NGO to sustain their impactful social services programme for the benefit of Benue youths, women and other Nigerians. Over the years, many other groups such as national and international organizations have honoured the First Lady in recognition of her unique model of empowering the needy and providing the needed resource, facilities as well as resource persons to train and equip many others with relevant skills to enable them remain competitive in an increasingly globalized world where innovative and vocational skills have become a must for gainful employment.

Some of the entities that have honoured the wife of the Benue State Governor include the Centre for Food Technology and Research, CEFTER of the Benue State University who gave her a “Platinum Merit Award. Others include Distinguished Embodiment of Humanitarian Services by NKST, An Icon of Hope Award by the Assemblies of God Church, Women’s Ministry, Igede District, Konshisha, ‘An Award of Outstanding Humanitarian Service to ESLF by renowned clergyman and humanitarian worker, Reverend Father Solomon Ukeyima through its Founder, the First Lady. Other Notable Award received by the Mother of Benue include “Matron of Immigration Officers Wives Forum” IMMOWA, Award of Excellence by Arch. Bishop Yimam Orkwar of All Nations Evangelism Ministry, Makurdi, award of and illustrious award of “First lady of the Year by Daily Assets Award amongst others. In the education sector, she has also been awarded several awards among them a “Literary Excellence Award” by the First Benue Book and Arts Festival amongst many other Lifetime Humanitarian Awards just to mention a few.

The role of divine timing is strategic to the accomplishment of objectives. It is believed that God ordained the First Lady to be a vessel through which thousands of women and youth would be positively impacted with skills, health care services as well as education. These sectors are key socio-economic empowerment the world over. We must continue to play our own role by consistently praying for the wife of the Governor whose staunch support for Governor Samuel Ortom has helped provide the much-needed moral booster for him to lead with courage and the fear of God.
