FG Floods Major Cities with Policemen Ahead of One Million-Man March

Hundreds of policemen and security operatives have been deployed in major cities across Nigeria as organisers of the #EndBadGovernance protest prepare for a one million-man march today, Saturday. The protest, which has been scheduled to last for 10 days, is expected to climax today. However, it has been marred by killings and attacks on protesters and journalists.

The nationwide protesters are demanding several key changes, including a reversal of the fuel subsidy removal, an increase in the minimum wage to N250,000, and an end to bad governance. Although the protest has lost steam in some parts of the country, momentum remains strong in states like Kano, Kaduna, Rivers, and Bauchi.

Organising groups have threatened to lock down the entire country today to press home their demands. President Bola Tinubu’s recent televised statewide broadcast, where he appealed for an end to the rallies, did not convince the protesters. They are mobilising a one-million-man march to culminate the 10-day rally.

In a statement, the National Coordinator of the Take It Back Movement, Sanyaolu Juwon, demanded the release of protesters and organisers who were arrested by security agents. He condemned their continued imprisonment by the Department of State Services (DSS) and the police, calling it a gross violation of their rights.

Increased surveillance by security agencies has been observed in the Business Central District area of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), where roadblocks have been set up, slowing down vehicular movement.

The #EndBadGovernanceInNigeria campaign continues to be a critical juncture in the nation’s struggle for change, drawing participants from every corner of Nigeria and the Diaspora. As the one-million-man march unfolds, tensions remain high, and the world watches to see how the government responds to the protesters’ demands.
