Governor Yusuf Defies Court Order, Insists on Saturday’s Local Government Elections

Kano State Governor Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf has declared that Saturday’s local government election will proceed as planned, despite a Federal High Court ruling deeming it invalid due to the presence of New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) members as executive officers within the election commission.

Speaking to a large gathering of supporters at the Sani Abacha Indoor Stadium, Governor Yusuf reaffirmed his commitment, saying, “No retreat, no surrender.” The governor presented NNPP flags to the 44 local government chairmen and councilor candidates, signaling his resolve to move forward with the election.

Governor Yusuf assured that the state government and the Kano State Independent Electoral Commission (KANSIEC) are constitutionally empowered to conduct the election and will not allow disruptions to the current peace in the state.

“No one will stop KANSIEC from holding the polls on Saturday,” he stated, emphasizing that the administration is fully prepared to swear in the candidates deemed victorious by the electoral board.

Addressing NNPP supporters, the governor urged them to return to their wards and prepare for the election, expressing confidence that the party will secure all 44 chairmanship and 484 councilor seats. He thanked God for the state’s safety and for the positive image the NNPP has maintained both within Kano and beyond.

Dr. Audu Ajuji, Acting National Chairman of the NNPP, expressed optimism for a peaceful election, predicting a landslide victory for the party. Alhaji Hashim Sulaiman Dungurawa, Kano NNPP Chairman, described the gathering as “remarkable” and emphasized the party’s intent to remain in power beyond 2027. Dungurawa noted that the state’s citizens back NNPP leaders for their integrity, distancing themselves from opposing politicians they view as dishonest.
