“It is a joint EU – UN partnership involving numerous multi-level and multi-sectoral partnerships in a number of countries (including Nigeria) with substantial levels of gender inequality. Specifically, the project seeks to end all forms of Sexual and Gender Based Violence (SGBV) and harmful practices (HPs) by confronting deep-rooted socio-cultural biases against women and girls which create enabling environments for violence to occur.
“The Gender Advocacy and Women Resource Centre (GAWRC) is one of the partners of UN Women implementing the SI in Lagos state, Nigeria. Our organization launched activities in two communities within the state; Peculiar community, Ikorodu (Ikorodu-West LCDA) and Oko-Agbon community, Iwaya (Yaba LCDA). Our activities in these communities include legal literacy programmes and trainings on gender and sexuality education. Through these programmes, hidden biases within traditional and cultural norms are exposed and participants are challenged to adopt bias-free ideas to replace them. We also educate our target communities on the laws and agencies combating violence in Nigeria and provide contact information so that these agencies can be reached where necessary.” The director further said.
She also said that GAWRC had also initiated the formation of a number of groups or committees within its target communities to promote co-dependency and teamwork in order to achieve their action plans to eliminate violence in their respective communities. Oko-Agbon community presently has its Opinion Leaders group, Community Watch/Vigilante group, Women’s group, Men’s group and Young Persons group coordinating their respective activities to address violence in the community.
