Nigeria-born England forward Carlton Cole has been declared bankrupt after a 16-year playing career in the Premier League where he earned millions.
Cole, 34, was informed of the verdict at London’s High Court.
The player has said he hopes his condition can serve as a lesson to younger players not to be deceived by the wealth of the game.
“I hope my story will help young footballers to take responsibility for who they listen to and take advice from,” Cole said.
“Unfortunately, I didn’t realize what was going on until my career was in the latter years and too late for me to turn things around.”
He featured seven times for England and had a long spell with West Ham where he played 293 games and bagged 68 goals for the Hammers over nine years.
