Actors, Yomi Fabiyi, Kemi Afolabi and Others During The Walk In Lagos Over The Weekend

It was a conglomeration of the creme de l’creme in the society ranging from Judiciary, Movies, Music, Comedy, Scholars, Students, Television Personalities and so on at the two days Human Rights Summit at the Banquet Hall , Sheraton Hotel, Lagos put together by the convener, Actor Yomi Fabiyi under the auspices of his NGO, BREAK THE SILENCE FOUNDATION.

The Summit with the Theme: SERIAL HUMAN RIGHTS VIOLATIONS; A THREAT TO NIGERIA’S PEACE AND DEVELOPMENT.

In a cultural fashion, Ara, the foremost talking drummer used her drum to open the summit with the National Anthem. The convener Yomi Fabiyi in his opening remarks took us into his journey of when Human Rights campaign started.

He added that doing the right thing is far more important that thinking of whether to be loved or hated. He affirmed that intelligent people are never silent, they only know when to keep quiet, stressing that he notice that silence and fear are the major problem why abuses and violations are increasing in the society, hence the initiative to have his foundation on breaking the silence.

The KeyNote Speaker, Mrs Osai Ojigho, Country Director, Amnesty International (Nigeria) laid emphasis on the need for Nigerians to stand and defend their rights vigorously and that the government needs to do much to improve on the logistics and welfare of the Nigeria Police in order for it to deliver quality public services and enforce legitimate human rights protection.

She reiterated that Nigeria is only a good human rights country on papers as we have signed virtually all treaties but implementation is low or missing, this she says confuses the outside hence we must speak out and educate people on Human Rights. She however urges Nigerians not to keep talking and must keep asking for their rights.

Others who delivered papers are topmost musician and politician, Kenny Saint Brown(best). She stressed the need for the rights of copyright owners to be adequately protected.

Olufe McMedal, a student of IGBOBI COLLEGE, YABA had his turn to deliever his paper, he caught the attention of all the participants with his punchlines and composture.

He noted that equality and human dignity needs to be core of the government if this country will move towards reliable development. He highlighted that protecting the rights of everyone equally is a duty everyone must take seriously.

Barrister Adeola Oyinlade, a United Nations’ Peace Ambassador and 2018 International Bar Association Human Rights Awardee presented the KNOW YOUR RIGHTS NIGERIA APPS which is available in English, Yoruba, Hausa and Igbo. He added that Human Rights is a global brand all countries must embrace it to survive.

The Panel Session is such a rich and unique one. Ikechukwu Obienu, foremost newscaster with TVC News was the moderator.

The participants asked several questions from the panelists and it was also quite revealing.

Sola Kosoko in her closing remarks enjoin everyone to think of how to add value to the society and to make joining a Human Rights NGO that will positively bring change to the society their consideration for the overall Peace and Development.
