Abducted Kaduna Journalists and Families Freed After Six Days in Captivity

In a significant development, two journalists, AbdulGafar Alabelewe of The Nation and AbdulRaheem Aodu of Blueprint, along with their family members, have been freed after six days in captivity. The journalists were abducted from their homes in the Danhonu community of Millennium City, Kaduna, on July 6, 2024.

The release was confirmed by the Chairperson of the Kaduna State Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Asma’u Halilu, who expressed gratitude to various security agencies and well-meaning Nigerians for their support during the ordeal. The journalists and their families are currently in Abuja for debriefing and medical attention.

This incident has sparked renewed calls for the protection of journalists and the safeguarding of free speech in Nigeria, with the launch of the ‘#DontPoliceMySpeech’ campaign.
