South African opposition party ActionSA has raised serious concerns and demanded answers from the Department of Home Affairs regarding how Chidimma Adetshina’s mother was able to travel to Nigeria despite being under investigation for fraud and identity theft.
Chidimma Adetshina, recently crowned Miss Universe Nigeria, withdrew from the Miss South Africa pageant due to the controversy surrounding her citizenship status. Her mother, who is at the center of an ongoing investigation by the Department of Home Affairs, was reportedly seen in Nigeria during the live broadcast of the Miss Universe Nigeria contest.
ActionSA’s chief whip, Lerato Ngobeni, expressed alarm over the situation, stating, “Given the nature of the investigation, which involves circumventing immigration controls, it is reasonable to expect that any travel would be restricted, especially to Nigeria”. Ngobeni emphasized the need for stringent enforcement of immigration laws, particularly in cases involving fraud.
The Department of Home Affairs had previously indicated that there was prima facie evidence suggesting that Adetshina’s mother may have committed fraud and identity theft. This revelation came after a probe into Adetshina’s citizenship status, which raised questions about her eligibility to compete in the Miss South Africa pageant.
The controversy has sparked a broader debate about the integrity of South Africa’s immigration system. ActionSA highlighted figures from a June 2022 report by the Ministerial Committee on the Issuance of Permits and Visas, which revealed that out of 36,647 fraudulent activities detected, 12,177 originated from Nigerians.
As the investigation continues, the Department of Home Affairs is expected to provide clarity on how Adetshina’s mother was able to leave the country.
