Breaking: Former Minister Ogbonnaya Onu Passes Away

Dr. Ogbonnaya Onu, a prominent figure in Nigerian politics and science, has died after a brief illness. He was 72 years old.

Onu served as the first civilian governor of Abia State from 1999 to 2003. He later went on to become the longest-serving Minister of Science, Technology and Innovation under President Buhari’s administration, holding the position from November 2015 until his resignation in 2022.

US-based journalist Jackson Udeh first reported the news of Dr. Ogbonnaya Onu’s passing earlier today, Thursday, April 11, 2024, via Twitter. Udeh’s tweet stated that Dr. Onu died earlier that morning in an Abuja hospital.While the cause of death remains unconfirmed, tributes have already begun pouring in for the prominent politician and science advocate. Dr. Onu’s family is yet to release an official statement.

Onu was also a contender in the 2023 presidential primaries for the All Progressives Congress (APC) but lost the nomination to eventual winner Bola Tinubu.
