In a surprising turn of events, Iran’s Vice President Mohammad Javad Zarif has tendered his resignation just 11 days into his tenure. The moderate politician cited dissatisfaction with his work and a failure to meet expectations as the reasons behind his decision.

Zarif, a former foreign minister, expressed regret that he had not been able to fulfill promises made during the selection process for President Masoud Pezeshkian’s new Cabinet. At least seven of the 19 ministers nominated were not his first choice, leading to disagreements and frustration.

President Pezeshkian, who assumed office at the end of July, presented his Cabinet to parliament for approval. However, the proposed list drew criticism from some within Iran’s reformist camp, particularly regarding the inclusion of conservatives from the previous government. Zarif emphasized his disappointment in not achieving the inclusion of women, youth, and ethnic groups as promised.

Zarif’s resignation marks the second crisis faced by President Pezeshkian since taking office. The recent killing of Palestinian militant Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran added further strain to the administration.

During Pezeshkian’s presidential campaign, Zarif played a pivotal role as his right-hand man and was instrumental in shaping the administration’s foreign policy. As Iran’s chief diplomat from 2013 to 2021, Zarif successfully negotiated the landmark international nuclear agreement with world powers in 2015. His departure leaves a void in the strategic affairs portfolio, and Pezeshkian’s hopes of resuming nuclear negotiations now face uncertainty.

Zarif, who also faced pressure due to his children holding U.S. citizenship, announced that he would return to academia and focus less on Iran’s domestic politics. The impact of his resignation on the administration’s stability remains to be seen.
