Eagles No. 1 Keeper Begins Life In Spanish Lower Division

Nigeria’s number one goalkeeper, Francis Uzoho, has officially joined Spanish Segunda side Elche on a season-long loan deal from Deportivo La Coruna, the club confirmed on Friday.

Elche were thrown out of the top division as a punishment for not paying tax debts, despite finishing 13th in the La Liga table.

And the 19-year-old Super Eagles shot stopper needed a side where he could command regular game time, having failed to cement a place in Deportivo’s main team.

Deportivo were also relegated from the Spanish top-flight last season.

Concise News had reported on Thursday that Uzoho was all but set to join Elche, as his move was subject to approval by the La Liga board because Elche had already exceeded their budgetary limit.

“The club and the R.C. Deportivo de la Coruña have agreed the transfer of goalkeeper Francis Uzoho on a one-year loan deal which comes after he played for Nigeria at the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia,” reads a statement on Elche’s official website on Friday.

Uzoho is among the 24 players invited on Friday by Eagles manager Gernot Rohr for an Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Seychelles in September.
