The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Parliament is taking decisive steps to ensure the transparent and judicious utilization of resources. Benjamin Kalu, Chairman of the Finance and Budget Committee, revealed this commitment during a recent meeting in Abidjan, Republic of Côte d’Ivoire.
The legislative arm of ECOWAS will intensify its oversight functions on the executive arm. This move aims to guarantee that financial resources are used transparently and for the benefit of the people.
Kalu, who also serves as the Deputy Speaker of Nigeria’s House of Representatives, emphasized the critical role of oversight in holding the Executive accountable to both Parliament and citizens.
The Joint Committee on Administration, Finance and Budget/Public Accounts/Macroeconomic Policy and Economic Research convened to discuss the ECOWAS Parliament’s role in community budget formulation and monitoring. – Representatives gained insights into budgeting processes, equipping them with the necessary knowledge to manage community resources prudently.
Kalu stressed that the Community Levy should positively impact every individual, especially those in vulnerable strata. Parliament’s duty lies in ensuring responsible utilization of public resources by the Executive, aligning with the Supplementary Act and adopting appropriate resolutions
