In a significant legal victory, the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) has announced that the Court of Appeal has unanimously reaffirmed the nomination of Dr. Asue Ighodalo as its candidate for the upcoming Edo State governorship election scheduled for September 21, 2024. This judgement has been hailed by the PDP as a validation of the integrity and transparency of its nomination process.
The PDP’s National Publicity Secretary, Debo Ologunagba, issued a statement celebrating the court’s decision, which he described as a triumph for democracy and the rule of law. Ologunagba emphasized that the judgement effectively silences critics from the All Progressives Congress (APC), who have been attempting to undermine Ighodalo’s candidacy. He noted that Ighodalo’s growing popularity and acceptance among the people of Edo State, including some key APC members, have been a source of frustration for the opposition.
The court’s decision was met with widespread jubilation across Edo State, reflecting the strong support for Ighodalo’s candidacy. The PDP believes this support is indicative of a forthcoming victory in the governorship election. Ologunagba urged the APC and its candidate, Monday Okpebholo, along with former governor Adams Oshiomhole, to accept the reality of their impending defeat and respect the will of the people.
The Court of Appeal’s judgement also addressed the issue of the 378 ad hoc delegates who sought to challenge the PDP’s nomination process. The court ruled that these delegates lacked the jurisdiction to initiate the suit, thereby upholding the legitimacy of Ighodalo’s nomination.
