Ex-US official slams Finland over Simon Ekpa’s arrest

A former United States government official has criticized Finland for the recent arrest of Simon Ekpa, a Finland-based activist and leader of the Biafran independence movement.

Michael Rubin, a former Pentagon official, voiced his concerns in an article published on the American Enterprise Institute’s website. He accused Finland of jeopardizing its standing as a global advocate for human rights by detaining Ekpa on what he described as “baseless charges” brought forward by the Nigerian government.

Ekpa, who claims to be the prime minister-in-exile of Biafra, was arrested last week on allegations of inciting violence in southeastern Nigeria through his advocacy. Finnish authorities defended the arrest, stating their obligation to address issues of violence linked to individuals operating within their borders.

However, Rubin argued that Finland’s actions inadvertently align with what he characterized as Nigeria’s oppression of the Igbo people and other marginalized groups seeking self-determination. “This is about more than Simon Ekpa. It’s about Finland allowing its legal system to be misused by governments with questionable human rights practices,” Rubin asserted.

Ekpa’s supporters have condemned the arrest and pledged to intensify their efforts for Biafran independence. They have also called on international organizations to intervene and demand his immediate release.

The incident has sparked renewed debates about how nations address activism and self-determination movements while maintaining their commitment to human rights.
