French President, tweets in Pidgin as he welcomes Tinubu to France

French President Emmanuel Macron has ignited discussions online after greeting Nigeria’s President Bola Tinubu with a tweet in Pidgin English during his state visit to France.

In a tweet shared on Thursday evening, the Punch reported that Macron referred to Tinubu’s visit as a “great honour for France,” highlighting the enduring partnership and friendship between their two countries.

“Na great honour for France, my dear President Bola Tinubu @officialABAT, to welcome you for dis state visit as one big partner and friend of today and tomorrow,” the French leader expressed.

Macron, who had previously interned at the French Embassy in Nigeria, reminisced about his ties to the country, saying, “E still dey sweet me as I remember my time as a young intern for French Embassy for Nigeria.”

His use of Pidgin, a language commonly spoken in Nigeria, has garnered admiration from many Nigerians online, with numerous users praising his effort to connect culturally.

The tweet, which featured a photo of the two presidents shaking hands in front of their national flags, quickly went viral, attracting thousands of interactions.
