Fuel scarcity: NULGE chairman dies at filling station while queuing for petrol

Oluwatuyi Olasoji

The ongoing fuel scarcity in Nigeria has claimed another life, as Oluwatuyi Olasoji, the Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Local Government Employees (NULGE) for Akure South Local Government, tragically passed away on Monday, September 9, 2024. Olasoji collapsed while waiting to purchase fuel at a filling station in Akure, amid the worsening fuel crisis that has gripped the nation.

Witnesses at the scene recounted the harrowing moments leading up to Olasoji’s collapse. The NULGE chairman had been standing in line for hours, enduring the intense heat and frustration that have become all too common for Nigerians in recent weeks. The fuel scarcity has led to long queues, increased transport fares, and widespread discontent among the populace.

Olasoji was swiftly transported to the Federal Medical Centre in Owo, where he underwent emergency surgery. Despite the medical team’s efforts, he succumbed to complications shortly after the procedure. His death has left a void in the local government community, where he was known for his unwavering commitment to the welfare of his colleagues.

The fuel scarcity crisis has been attributed to several factors, including the deregulation of the petroleum market and the impact of exchange rate fluctuations. The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) had previously assured the public that relief was on the horizon, with the anticipated petrol lifting from the Dangote Refinery expected to alleviate the shortages.

Olasoji’s passing has ignited a wave of grief and anger among his peers and the general public. Social media platforms have been flooded with tributes and calls for urgent government intervention to resolve the fuel crisis. The NULGE chairman was celebrated for his dedication to improving the working conditions and rights of local government employees.

In a heartfelt statement, the NULGE National President paid tribute to Olasoji, describing him as a “tireless advocate for workers’ rights and a pillar of the community.” He called on the government to address the root causes of the fuel scarcity and implement measures to prevent further loss of life.

As the community grapples with the loss of a respected leader, the broader implications of the fuel crisis continue to loom large. Olasoji’s death underscores the urgent need for effective and sustainable solutions to Nigeria’s perennial fuel shortages.
