Miss Universe Nigeria Seeks Therapy After Xenophobic Abuse in South Africa

Chidimma Adetshina, recently crowned Miss Universe Nigeria, has announced she will seek therapy following a harrowing experience of xenophobic abuse in South Africa. The 23-year-old beauty queen, who has Nigerian and Mozambican roots, faced intense scrutiny and hostility during her participation in the Miss South Africa beauty contest.

Adetshina, who was born in Soweto, South Africa, became the subject of a government investigation after allegations surfaced that her mother may have committed identity theft to obtain South African citizenship. This controversy led her to withdraw from the Miss South Africa contest.

Despite the challenges, Adetshina was invited to compete in the Miss Universe Nigeria pageant, which she won. However, she revealed in a recent interview that the ordeal had taken a significant emotional toll on her. “It’s just not a nice feeling, I think I’ve been avoiding it a lot and only now it’s started to cloud me,” she said, tearfully. “It’s something I will work on and see a therapist because I feel like I have been suppressing my emotions… because what has happened… it wasn’t a minor thing, it was actually really major”.

Adetshina’s victory in the Miss Universe Nigeria contest was a powerful moment for her, but it also sparked debate. Some critics argued that her entry into the competition was unfair to other contestants who had participated in the entire process. Adetshina, however, defended her journey, stating, “I do get where people are coming from, but at the end of the day I also had my own journey, I had my fair share of going through the process”.

As she prepares for the international Miss Universe competition in Mexico this November, Adetshina remains determined to embrace her dual heritage. “I still see myself proudly South African… I still see myself proudly Nigerian,” she affirmed.
