OPINION: My Favorite Naija Romantic Collaborations By Onus Obinyan

I love good music and will lock down a jam that hits me right, on “back to back” repeat. I nor go tire. I become a slave in a haze…dazed by a song that becomes my maze.

The last few years has seen the Naija music industry blow up fast and hard and get its whole body through the door worldwide. From the young cats burning the charts home and abroad and winning everything in sight plus the old hands still rolling at blistering pace and holding it down big time…we are a raging inferno!

Mad jamz everywhere you turn…but my fire burns currently on a few collabos that have my long tongue hanging and dripping. Blindsided and awed by these collaborations I can only scream “what the f**k?” inside the head in my mind. Yeah…I speak for me, but I know a great number of y’all out there are equally stunned by these collabos.

In no particular order, my list has five songs between 2020 – 2021 that blow me away effortlessly just like Chris Oyakhilome dey take blow him congregation skata go ground dat year with one wave of hand.

“Running to You” by Chike feat. Simi has this sweet, cheesy feel that is forgivable courtesy of his vocal quality and the “Simi” spice, but majorly because it manages to wrap my small head in the romantic, street fantasy that has me wanting to fight karate that I don’t know how to fight for that hot chic that does not know that I exist and I have never even spoken to…all because I nor get the liver.

Wizkid and Tems turn me to jelly on dis collabo…”Essence.” They set me up. The two of dem balance, finish me with dis gbedu. The lazy, laid back texture of this jam takes me to that height where “foreplay” rules supreme and I find myself visually savouring the offering on this plate…”you don’t need no other body…only you fi hold my body” while wondering and worried about my ability to hold on and not “rush in to rush out.” You know that depressing, ego killing s**t that happens when you dig in too soon and come out weak and limp. The fusion of these two supremely confident and skilled creatives is mind blowing in a Krazy-beautiful way and raises the bar on collabos.

From the get-go, Good Girl LA drops good music, so “jumping in bed” with Ace Lyricist and rapper Vector on the coded banger “Early Momo” had only one way to go…up and away. Stepping on the brakes on this one and running on cruise control, Vector’s lover-man side, abi na soft underbelly is exposed as he lounges and rhymes his way through the silky soft cocoon of Good Girl’s sublime vocals to deliver a beautiful, simple song.

Rap or sing, Ladipoe is an addictive drug and has remained a breath of fresh air for a few years now. He brings his A-game on the track “Know You,” with supreme songstress Simi riding shotgun in flawless royalty. Interweaving seamlessly, these svelte acts bring fire to a cold room and have me longing to be kissed in other places. Chai! My imagination nor go kill me o! You horny honey?

Yeah! She’s Ghanaian but this beautiful “wild fire” Jackline Acheampong aka Gyakie most definitely deserves to be on this list ‘cos she broke me into smithereens on the remix “Forever” that has “the explosion” from Port Harcourt Omah Lay holding it down in typical style. The combo of these two cuties on this collabo is maaad! Urrrrgh! I wish I could sing.

So, you see…that’s the list that tingles, teases and tickles me currently. As the mata be now, e klear say two creative minds pure pass one and birth original and really great works that live forever in music history.
