N/Assembly Leadership: APC Youths Endorse Lawan, As Zonal Leaders Caution Party

Ahmad Lawan

The Progressives Youth Forum on Tuesday endorsed the Senate Leader, Ahmad Lawan, for the position of the Senate President of the ninth National Assembly.

Members of the group led by their Chairman, Ife Adebayo, gave the endorsement when they visited Lawan’s campaign secretariat in Abuja.

Adebayo, who spoke on behalf of his colleagues, said Lawan remained the best candidate for the job in terms of experience, leadership qualities and ability to mobilize support for the All Progressives Congress-led government.

He said, “We are very pleased by the track-record of Senator Ahmad Lawan at the nation’s parliament in the last 20 years.

“We have resolved to offer our support for his aspiration so that the expectations of the youth in President Muhammadu Buhari’s second term will be actualized.”

Adebayo called on all senators-elect to rally round Lawan for what he called development-driven leadership of the ninth Senate.

Lawan commended the youth for their endorsement and pledged to mobilise his colleagues to ensure the success of the APC manifesto and President Muhammadu Buhari’s good intention for the country.

He said, “My campaign is based on a slogan of leading a Senate and National Assembly that work for Nigeria. We are not going for the Senate Presidency because of name, but to make a serious and positive difference in the governance of the country.

“We will work with Mr President and his administration to fulfill all his campaign promises in 2015 and 2019.

“2023 will be a testing period for the APC. That is when the party will know whether it is solid enough or not. Today, the APC is largely revolving around President Buhari. Take away the President, the APC will be in trouble.”

He disabused the minds of those who were insinuating that the Senate under him would be a rubber stamp one. According to him, separation of powers does not give independence to any arm of government but only calls for specialization.
