NDLEA Intercepts N9.8bn Codeine Shipments from India in Major Drug Bust

In a significant operation, the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has successfully intercepted shipments of codeine valued at an astonishing N9.8 billion, originating from India.

The operation, which took place at Lagos’ Murtala Muhammed International Airport, marks one of the agency’s largest drug seizures in recent years. According to NDLEA spokesperson Femi Babafemi, the intercepted shipment consisted of thousands of bottles of the highly addictive substance, which were concealed in packages labeled as “exotic perfumes.”

The agency’s intelligence unit had been monitoring the shipment, which was believed to be destined for various locations across Nigeria. “This operation highlights our commitment to combating drug trafficking and protecting our communities from the dangers of substance abuse,” Babafemi stated during a press briefing. He emphasized the importance of vigilance and collaboration with international partners to tackle the growing problem of drug smuggling.

The NDLEA has ramped up efforts to address the rising misuse of codeine, which has become a major public health concern in Nigeria. The agency has previously launched campaigns to raise awareness about the dangers of codeine addiction and has been working closely with healthcare providers to ensure that prescriptions are managed responsibly.

Following the interception, the NDLEA is conducting further investigations to identify the individuals and networks behind the shipment. Authorities are urging the public to report any suspicious activities related to drug trafficking, as they continue their crackdown on illicit substances. As the fight against drug abuse intensifies, the NDLEA remains resolute in its mission to safeguard the health and safety of Nigerians, ensuring that such significant shipments do not reach the streets.
