In a recent development, the Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Benjamin Kalu, has assured that students from the South-East geopolitical zone will soon benefit from the Federal Government’s student loan program. This announcement comes in response to concerns raised by the South-East Caucus in the National Assembly regarding the region’s initial exclusion from the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND).
Kalu revealed that his office has been actively engaging with the authorities responsible for the student loans to address the issue. He expressed optimism that the matter would be resolved in the coming days. According to Kalu, discussions with NELFUND directors identified low student registration from the South-East and errors in completing relevant forms, such as missing Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) results, as the primary reasons for the exclusion.
To rectify these issues, affected institutions in the South-East have taken steps to ensure proper registration and form completion. Additionally, the governors of the region are working to increase the number of participating students. Members of the National Assembly have also been encouraged to reach out to their constituents to facilitate immediate compliance.
Kalu’s office has initiated awareness measures, including the production of jingles in English, Igbo, and Pidgin English, which will be broadcast on various radio stations across the region. He urged institutions to encourage their students to apply for the loans and called on stakeholders to set up community registration points to boost participation.
The Deputy Speaker appealed for patience among South-East students and residents, assuring them that the necessary steps are being taken to resolve the issue and include them in the Federal Government’s student loan program.
