NLC Demands Immediate Reversal of Electricity Tariff and Fuel Price Hike

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has called for the immediate reversal of the recent hikes in electricity tariffs and fuel prices, describing the increases as a betrayal of trust by the Federal Government. The NLC President, Comrade Joe Ajaero, expressed deep disappointment over the government’s decision to raise the pump price of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) and electricity tariffs, despite previous assurances that such measures would not be implemented.

In a statement released on Tuesday, Ajaero highlighted that the government had agreed to a new national minimum wage of ₦70,000 under the condition that fuel prices would remain stable. However, the recent hike in fuel prices to ₦897 per litre and a 250% increase in electricity tariffs have left many Nigerians struggling to cope with the rising cost of living.

“We are filled with a deep sense of betrayal as the federal government clandestinely increases the pump price of PMS,” Ajaero stated. He emphasized that the NLC had accepted the ₦70,000 minimum wage to avoid further hardship on Nigerians, but the government’s actions have now rendered this agreement ineffective.

The NLC has warned that these increases will exacerbate the already dire economic situation in the country, leading to more widespread poverty and hardship. The Congress has also threatened to mobilize workers for nationwide protests if the government fails to reverse the hikes immediately.

This development comes amid growing public discontent and protests against the government’s economic policies. Many Nigerians have taken to the streets to demand better governance and relief from the escalating cost of living.
