NLC President Joe Ajaero Regains Freedom After DSS Detention

Joe Ajaero, President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), has regained his freedom after being detained by the Department of State Services (DSS). Ajaero was apprehended on Monday at Abuja’s Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport while en route to the United Kingdom for an official engagement. His release was confirmed by the NLC through a post on its official X (formerly Twitter) account in the early hours of Tuesday.

The NLC’s swift response to Ajaero’s detention highlighted the growing tensions between the labour movement and the government. The NLC condemned the detention as an act of intimidation and demanded Ajaero’s immediate release, stressing that he is neither a fugitive nor a criminal. The NLC’s communiqué also called for the reversal of the petrol price hike to N617 per litre and the immediate implementation of the newly signed national minimum wage.

Ajaero’s detention and subsequent release come at a time of heightened labour unrest in Nigeria. The NLC has been vocal about various issues, including the recent electricity tariff hike and the need for a fair minimum wage.
