Former Governor Godwin Obaseki has responded to the announcement by Governor Monday Okpebholo of a probe into the previous administration. Okpebholo recently approved the formation of a 14-member State Assets Verification Committee to investigate Obaseki’s government, with the committee set to be sworn in on Tuesday.
In response, Crusoe Osagie, Obaseki’s media aide, condemned the probe as an attempt to distract from the perceived shortcomings of the current administration. Osagie described the investigation as a “smokescreen” to cover up what he called Okpebholo’s administration’s incompetence and lack of direction.
“The idea of setting up a committee to investigate the Obaseki administration is not only ridiculous but also an empty political move,” Osagie stated. “It is yet another meaningless probe in a series of actions taken by the Okpebholo government since they assumed office in questionable circumstances.”
He accused the current administration of focusing on probes, including investigations into civil service employment and government assets, instead of addressing the pressing issues facing the state. Osagie argued that these actions are a way to avoid confronting the real challenges of governance.
“The governor has shown that he lacks the vision and readiness for office, opting instead to engage in these distractions to avoid taking meaningful action for the people of Edo State,” Osagie continued. “The people are already aware of his incompetence and his reliance on powerful figures seeking revenge for being excluded from the benefits of the Obaseki administration.”
Osagie defended Obaseki’s tenure, highlighting the transparency, fiscal responsibility, and progress achieved during his time in office. He pointed out that Obaseki’s administration laid a strong foundation for good governance, which allowed for significant development in various sectors.
“This so-called probe is merely a diversion,” Osagie concluded. “Okpebholo should focus on improving the lives of the people of Edo State instead of wasting state resources on futile investigations. The people of Edo are watching, and they will judge this government not by the noise it creates but by the tangible results it delivers.”
