Okupe Congratulates Tinubu on Re-Election as ECOWAS Chairman

Dr. Doyin Okupe, former Director-General of the Labour Party (LP) Presidential Campaign Council, extended his congratulations to President Bola Tinubu on his re-election as the leader of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS). The news comes after President Tinubu’s successful re-election during the 65th Ordinary Session of the bloc held in Abuja on Sunday.

Dr. Okupe expressed admiration for President Tinubu’s leadership, noting that it seems to be his destiny to assume crucial positions during challenging times. He urged divine guidance and wisdom for Tinubu as he navigates the turbulent waters of this new tenure.

Tinubu’s primary agenda, according to Dr. Okupe, should be to restore the leadership of the Sahel Nations—Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger—to the ECOWAS. The first step, he suggested, involves reconciliation with Nigeria’s immediate neighbor, the Republic of Niger. Dr. Okupe advised Tinubu to seek support from influential Northern leaders, including former President Muhammadu Buhari, who have strong ties with Niger. Additionally, he proposed leveraging the African Union (AU) to spearhead a reconciliatory agenda, with possible diplomatic outreach to Russia through the AU.

The congratulatory message reads: “I congratulate President Bola Tinubu on his re-election as the leader of ECOWAS.

“It is difficult for me to understand why it is the destiny of President Tinubu to come into position of leadership, both at national and regional levels, at periods of hardship and difficulty.

“But I pray for divine guidance and wisdom to navigate these turbulent waters.”… “The Africa Union as a body can be made to officially spearhead this reconcilatory agenda while a diplomatic outreach to Russia for this purpose, especially if handled at the level of the AU, will certainly be helpful,” he noted
