The Ondo State Executive Council has approved the allocation of funds for rural development and improved public safety initiatives.
₦3.47 billion has been designated for the construction of feeder roads in rural areas. This project aims to enhance the transportation network within the state, facilitating the movement of agricultural produce and goods between rural communities and urban centers. Improved road infrastructure is expected to stimulate economic activities in rural areas.
₦500 million has also been earmarked for the “Light Up Akure” project. This initiative focuses on installing street lights in the state capital, Akure. The government aims to improve public safety and security by providing better illumination in the city, with plans for future expansion to other parts of the state.
The special Commissioner for energy and mineral resources Razaq Obe, stated during a press briefing that the “Light Up Akure” project signifies the government’s commitment to a “21st-century paradigm shift for sustainable development.” He emphasized the importance of public participation in protecting these newly installed street lights.
Local residents have expressed mixed reactions to the news. While many acknowledge the potential benefits of improved road networks and increased security measures, concerns regarding the project’s execution and transparency have also been voiced.
“We are hopeful that these projects will bring about positive changes in our communities,” said Johnson, a resident of a rural area.
“Better roads will make it easier for us to transport our farm produce to the markets, and street lights will definitely improve security at night.”
The Ondo State government has not yet revealed the specific timeline for the commencement of these projects.
