Politicians feeding fat, asking Nigerians to sacrifice – Bakare

Tunde Bakare

Pastor Tunde Bakare, the Serving Overseer of the Citadel Global Community Church, has called out Nigerian politicians for not living lean or sacrificing like the citizens they ask to endure economic hardship. Speaking at the Wilson and Yinka Badejo Memorial Lecture 2024 held at the Nigerian Institute of International Affairs, Bakare emphasized the need for dialogue and empathy in addressing the country’s challenges.

Bakare stated, “An empathetic leader does not feed fat while asking the people to tighten their belts.” He highlighted that hunger transcends religious, tribal, and political boundaries, uniting citizens in their demand for better governance. The cleric also criticized the lack of ideology in major political parties, including the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

The event, organized by the Wilson & Badejo Foundation, aimed to honor the memories of former General Overseer of the Foursquare Gospel Church, Wilson Badejo, and his wife, Yinka.

In a related development, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s recent call for “sacrificing citizens” to fulfill Nigeria’s dreams has drawn responses from Nigerians, urging him to lead by example. Meanwhile, Bakare has previously urged Tinubu to focus on rooting out corruption rather than sacrificing citizens.

As Nigeria grapples with economic challenges, Bakare’s message underscores the importance of leadership accountability and shared sacrifices for the nation’s progress.
