Pro-Biafran activist Simon Ekpa to remain in Finnish custody, trial Set for 2025

Simon Ekpa, a leading pro-Biafran agitator, will remain in Finnish custody as authorities have scheduled his trial for May 2025. Ekpa was arrested in Finland earlier this year over allegations of terrorism-related activities and incitement to violence.

Mikko Laaksonen, Senior Detective Superintendent at Finland’s National Bureau of Investigation, revealed that prosecutors have until May 2025 to file formal charges against Ekpa. “The investigation remains ongoing, and no further details can be provided at this time,” Laaksonen stated.

He also explained that Ekpa’s remand could be reviewed every two weeks if requested, though no immediate changes to his detention are expected.

Ekpa’s arrest came as part of a wider investigation that included four additional suspects. Finnish authorities accuse him of using social media to instigate violence in Nigeria’s South-East region, issuing sit-at-home orders, and encouraging attacks on civilians and government officials.

The Finnish government has highlighted the importance of international cooperation in the case but has withheld specific details about the nature or scope of this collaboration.

A vocal advocate for the establishment of an independent Biafran state, Ekpa has frequently clashed with the Nigerian government. His actions have drawn widespread criticism for allegedly intensifying unrest in the South-East, where his directives have disrupted daily life and heightened tensions.

The forthcoming trial is expected to reveal more about the evidence collected against Ekpa and the charges he may face for his controversial activities.
