Rivers Court Lacks Jurisdiction to Sack Okocha-Led Committee – APC

The ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) has vehemently opposed the removal of the Tony Okocha-led caretaker committee, asserting that the Rivers State court lacks the authority to take such action. This development occurred shortly after a Rivers State High Court in Port Harcourt nullified the sacking of the Emeka Beke-led executive of the APC in Rivers State. The court, presided over by Justice Sika Aprioku, ruled that the National Working Committee of the party erred in dissolving the elected executives led by Emeka Beke. Justice Aprioku emphasized that the APC National Working Committee does not possess the power to dissolve a state’s elected executive or establish a caretaker committee while the elected executive’s tenure is still ongoing.

In response, the caretaker committee led by Tony Okocha has maintained its position, insisting that the court’s judgment cannot override an earlier ruling by the Supreme Court. Chibuike Ikenga, the Spokesman of the Rivers APC Caretaker Committee, labeled the dismissal as “an effort in futility” and highlighted that their party had granted them the authority to continue acting in the internal affairs of the party.

Ikenga further emphasized that the court cannot compel individuals removed for anti-party activities to lead the party in the state, citing their support for Atiku Abubakar of the PDP during the campaign as the basis for their dissolution.

The APC’s rejection of the court ruling sets the stage for further legal battles, with both sides determined to assert their positions in the contentious Rivers State political landscape.
