Robbers Shot Lecturer Dead For Recognizing One Of Them – Police

Late Professor Emmanuel Amadi

The Rivers State Police Command has explained the circumstances surrounding the death of Prof. Emmanuel Amadi, who was murdered on Tuesday by some unidentified gunmen.

The state Police Public Relations Officer, Nnamdi Omoni, told newsmen in Port Harcourt on Thursday that the don recognised one of the hoodlums and was hit on the head with an iron rod as a result.

The gunmen suspected to be armed robbers had gained entry into Amadi’s residence in Rumuolumeni in the Obio/Akpor Local Government Area of the state around 4am on the fateful day.

It was learnt that the hoodlums, who had earlier left the vicinity, came back and attacked the Professor of Microbiology after they discovered that he recognised one of them.

Though it was not clear whether any cash or property was taken away by the bandits, the lecturer was rushed to the University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital, where he was confirmed dead.

Omoni, a Deputy Superintendent of Police, explained that the lecturer fainted after he was hit with the iron rod by one of the hoodlums.

He said, “We can confirm the sad incident of the murder of Prof. E. N. Amadi of the Rivers State University. Prof. Amadi was murdered on Wednesday, June 19, 2019, at about 4am when armed robbers attacked his house.

“He was able to identify one of them (robbers) and because he was able to identify one of them, they came back and hit him with a rod they were holding and the man fainted.

“His younger brother, Loveday, rushed him to the UPTH, where he gave up the ghost. It was after then that the family came to us to officially lodge a complaint at the Rumuolumeni Police Station about the incident. Our men immediately went to the hospital to identify the corpse.”

Omoni said that the state Commissioner of Police, Usman Belel, had order an investigation into the incident with a view to unraveling the circumstances that led to the death of the lecturer and also those behind the dastardly act.

“As we speak, the corpse has been deposited in the mortuary and an investigation has been ordered by the Commissioner of Police to unravel the circumstances and brain behind the lecturer’s murder,” Omoni stressed.

A source in the RSU confirmed the death of Amadi to Southern City News, adding that the circumstances surrounding the murder of the don was still sketchy.

“It has been confirmed that Prof. E. N. Amadi is dead. But the circumstances leading to his death are still sketchy,” the official said.
