Tragedy on Third Mainland Bridge: Two Plunge into Lagos Lagoon After Bus Accident

A horrific accident yesterday on the Third Mainland Bridge left two people missing, presumed to have fallen into the Lagos Lagoon.

The incident, which occurred around 11:10 am on Wednesday, involved a commercial bus traveling towards Lagos Island. According to eyewitnesses and emergency responders, the bus, suspected of experiencing brake failure, lost control and slammed into the bridge railings.

“The impact of the crash sent two passengers, an adult male and female, flying off the bus and into the lagoon,” said Olatunde Akinsanya, Director of Operations for the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA).

Emergency response teams, including the Marine Police, National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), and LASEMA, were immediately deployed to the scene. Rescue efforts focused on recovering the missing passengers and towing the damaged vehicle.

“Search and rescue operations are ongoing,” said Ibrahim Farinloye, the Lagos Territorial Coordinator for NEMA. “Our hearts go out to the families of those involved in this tragedy.”

While the official cause of the accident remains under investigation, initial reports suggest the bus driver may have been speeding.

The incident raises concerns about safety on the Third Mainland Bridge, which only reopened to the public in March 2024 after undergoing months of repairs.

The accident has sent shockwaves through the Lagos community. Many are expressing their condolences to the families of the missing individuals and urging authorities to ensure the safety of commuters on the bridge.

This is a developing story. Stay tuned for further updates on the search and rescue efforts.
