Darlington Orji, the Caretaker Chairman of Ikwerre Local Government Area in Rivers State, has emphatically stated that the Martin-Amaewhule led faction of the Rivers State House of Assembly lacks the legal standing to serve an impeachment notice to Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara. In an exclusive interview with ARISE NEWS, Orji addressed the ongoing political turmoil surrounding the faction’s actions.
“The Martin-led administration lacks the locus to serve impeachment notice on the governor,” Orji asserted. “As of today, they are not recognized members of the Rivers State House of Assembly due to the troubles they caused themselves. So, they cannot legally serve an impeachment notice on the governor, and the Rivers people are keenly observing this situation.”
Orji further explained that the faction’s status remains uncertain until the Supreme Court pronounces a verdict. He highlighted the constitutional process for declaring seats vacant, emphasizing that the speaker, Right Honourable Edison Ehie, had already declared their seats vacant and notified the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
The recent decision by the Rivers Court of Appeal to reverse Amaewhule and 24 others’ expulsion from the Rivers House of Assembly adds complexity to the issue. Orji acknowledged the multifaceted nature of the situation, urging the faction to present themselves to the people if they believe they are popular and enjoy the support of Rivers residents.
In the midst of this political drama, the term “honourable” has been questioned, as the Amaewhule faction engages in actions deemed “dishonourable” by critics.
