Tinubu signs five MoUs

Nigerian President Bola Tinubu and Chinese President Xi Jinping have elevated the bilateral relations between Nigeria and China to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership. This announcement was made during President Tinubu’s official visit to Beijing, ahead of the 2024 Summit of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation.

The new partnership aims to enhance mutual development, security, and economic collaboration between the two nations. President Tinubu emphasized the importance of this visit, noting that it marks a significant step for Nigeria and the rest of Africa. “Relations between China and Nigeria have indeed lasted for over half a century and should be further strengthened to advance our trade and economic development programmes,” Tinubu stated.

During their talks, the leaders inked several agreements, including those on nuclear energy, media exchanges, and infrastructure development. President Xi highlighted the strong mutual understanding between the two countries and expressed optimism about the future of China-Africa relations. “China and Nigeria, as major developing countries, strengthening strategic coordination, will inject fresh impetus to China-Africa relations in the new era and spearhead common progress among Global South countries,” Xi said.

The comprehensive strategic partnership is expected to result in robust development, stability, and security in the West African sub-region. It also aligns with Nigeria’s ongoing economic reforms aimed at sustainable growth and improved investment opportunities.

This development underscores the deepening ties between Nigeria and China, positioning both nations for greater cooperation and shared prosperity.
