Dr Adekunle Akindele, a chieftain of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in Ondo State, has lashed out at the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), accusing the party of monumental governance failures since it took over the reins of power in the state.
In an interview with New Telegraph on Sunday, Akindele assured Ondo residents that the PDP’s flagbearer for the upcoming November 16 governorship election, Hon. Agboola Ajayi, was prepared to restore the state’s lost glory.
Akindele, a former Caretaker Committee Chairman of the PDP in Osun State, expressed confidence in Ajayi’s ability to deliver effective governance.
“Our candidate, His Excellency Agboola Ajayi, is a politician who has been through all the stages of governance. Starting as a councillor, rising to become a local government chairman, a House of Representatives member, and ultimately the Deputy Governor of this state – he has the credentials,” Akindele said.
“One thing Ajayi has going for him is his grassroots connection. This is a man who has never lived outside Ondo State, except for when he was in Abuja representing his constituency at the Green Chamber. That means he understands the people, their worries, and what it takes to resolve them.”
In contrast, Akindele didn’t hold back in criticising the APC’s deputy governor, Lucky Aiyedatiwa.
“Aiyedatiwa is an outsider. I never heard of him until he became the deputy governor. These are people who have no real connection with the locals. They act according to the will of their paymasters. Agboola Ajayi, on the other hand, is a man after the people’s hearts, the one they are waiting for to bring prosperity back to Ondo. Governance is not rocket science. When someone has passed through these stages, it’s clear they are well-prepared to reduce the poverty and hardship ravaging the state,” he stated.
Akindele also criticised the current state of the health sector, describing it as abysmal.
“Besides the bad roads, the health sector is in ruins. There are too few doctors, and much of the infrastructure is dead. Take the General Hospital in Okitipupa as an example – it doesn’t even have electricity at night, and doctors can barely work. A responsible governor would tackle these issues, but instead, we have a leader busy appointing a needless number of Special Advisers and Personal Assistants.
His emergence as governor is an aberration, but come November 16, we hope to send him packing.”
Over the weekend, Akindele hosted PDP leaders from Ilutitun’s three wards, including chairmen, vice-chairmen, secretaries, youth leaders, and women leaders. During the meeting, he urged them to work hard to secure victory for the party.
