Nationwide Airport Shutdown Amid NLC Strike: Passengers Stranded

The ongoing strike by aviation unions affiliated with the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) has led to a complete shutdown of major airports across the country. As a result, thousands of passengers find themselves stranded, facing uncertainty about their travel plans.

Union members from aviation unions, including the National Union of Air Transport Employees (NUATE), Air Transport Services Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (ATSSSAN), Association of Nigerian Aviation Professionals (ANAP), and the National Association of Aircraft Pilots and Engineers (NAAPE), have taken part in the strike. They have effectively blocked airport entrances, preventing passengers from accessing terminals and boarding their flights. Both domestic and international travel has been severely affected.

At the Murtala Muhammed Airport (MMA) in Lagos, union members have barricaded all entrances, resulting in flight delays and cancellations. Passengers who arrived on time for their flights are now left frustrated and uncertain about when normal operations will resume. A similar situation is unfolding at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja, where terminal halls remain empty as passengers are unable to enter.

The strike was triggered by the failure of negotiations between labor unions and government representatives regarding the proposed national minimum wage. Despite efforts to find common ground, no resolution has been reached. As a result, passengers are caught in the crossfire, with their travel plans disrupted and no clear end in sight.

The consequences of the strike extend beyond airport closures. Businesses, tourism, and the overall economy are feeling the effects. Travelers are advised to stay informed about updates and explore alternative travel arrangements. The NLC and TUC remain steadfast in their demands, vowing to continue the strike until their concerns are addressed.

The shutdown of airports highlights the urgency of resolving labor disputes promptly. As passengers endure inconvenience, authorities must prioritize finding a solution to the wage-related issues and restoring normalcy to Nigeria’s air travel industry.
