Police Take Over All 23 Rivers Local Government Secretariats Amidst Tenure Crisis

Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Ezenwo Wike

In a bid to prevent further violence and maintain law and order, the Rivers State Police Command has assumed control of all 23 Local Government Area (LGA) secretariats. The move comes after a deadly clash between rival political factions over the tenure of outgoing council chairpersons.

The confrontation, sparked by disagreements regarding the chairmen’s terms, resulted in the tragic loss of a police officer and a vigilante member in Eberi-Omuma community. To avert further unrest, the police have secured the council secretariats and critical government facilities across the state.

SP Grace Iringe-Koko, the command’s spokesperson, emphasized that the deployment of anti-riot police officers to various council headquarters aims to restore order. She cautioned partisan groups against flouting the law and assured residents that the situation is under control.

As the tenure crisis deepens, the police remain vigilant, ensuring peace and stability in Rivers State.
