Protests Erupt in Kenya Over Controversial Tax Bill

Violent clashes erupted in Nairobi as protesters took to the streets to voice their opposition to a new finance bill that introduces unpopular tax proposals.   At least five people were killed during the clashes, according to paramedics on the ground. Around 40 others are being treated in hospitals for injuries sustained during the protests. Demonstrators breached the Kenyan parliament complex, leading to parts of the building catching fire. Hundreds of MPs sought refuge in the basement.

President William Ruto attributed the violence to “criminals” who hijacked the protests. He promised a full response to restore order.   The contentious finance bill includes several provisions that have sparked outrage among citizens. These measures include an increase in value-added tax (VAT) on essential goods, higher income tax rates for middle-income earners, and a levy on digital transactions.

Kenyans have expressed frustration over the perceived burden of these tax changes, especially during an economic downturn exacerbated by the pandemic. Many believe that the government should focus on curbing corruption and wasteful spending rather than imposing additional taxes on struggling citizens.

Civil society organizations, opposition parties, and trade unions have joined forces in condemning the bill. They argue that it disproportionately affects the most vulnerable segments of society and undermines economic recovery efforts.

The situation remains tense as Kenyans continue to express their anger over the new tax measures. We’ll closely monitor developments and provide updates as events unfold.
