Stray Bullet Hits Journalist at Kano Government House

Naziru Idris Yau, a journalist with Abubakar Rimi Television (ARTV), was struck by a stray bullet within the confines of the Kano Government House. The incident occurred on Friday, May 3, 2024, coinciding with World Press Freedom Day—a day dedicated to raising awareness about the importance of press freedom and to remind governments of their duty to respect and uphold the right to freedom of expression enshrined under Article 19 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

Yau, who was on the government house grounds, reported feeling a sudden, sharp pain in his arm and upon inspection, discovered a bullet embedded in his flesh. Remarkably, he managed to remove the bullet himself before seeking medical attention. He was promptly treated at the Government House clinic, where after receiving medication, he was discharged with minor injuries.

The timing of this incident has raised concerns about the safety of journalists and the potential threats to press freedom, especially as it happened on a day meant to highlight the dangers faced by journalists worldwide. As of now, the source of the bullet remains unknown, and no one has claimed responsibility for the shooting.

Security officials stationed at the Government House have initiated an investigation to determine the origin of the gunshot. Meanwhile, neither the Kano State Police Command nor the State Government has issued a statement regarding the incident.
