A military convoy traveling from Onitsha to Enugu became the target of a deadly attack by unidentified gunmen, suspected to be affiliated with the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and its military wing, the Eastern Security Network (ESN). The ambush, which occurred on May 7th, 2024, has left a grim mark on Anambra State, resulting in the loss of 21 brave soldiers.

The convoy, en route to Enugu, was blindsided by the assailants, leading to a scene of chaos and devastation. Eyewitnesses, who have chosen to remain anonymous due to the sensitivity of the situation, reported that the attack was sudden and meticulously planned, ensuring maximum casualties among the soldiers.

The aftermath of the attack saw residents of the surrounding areas scrambling for safety, fearing the possibility of a military reprisal. Shop owners hurriedly closed their establishments as the area became enveloped in an atmosphere of panic and uncertainty.

Emergency services were dispatched promptly, with ambulances arriving to tend to the wounded. Meanwhile, the deceased soldiers were respectfully transported to the Federal Medical Centre, Awka (FMC-A), where they will be held in the morgue pending further arrangements.

As the community grapples with this tragedy, the military has yet to issue a formal statement. However, the incident has undoubtedly escalated tensions in a region already troubled by separatist sentiments and sporadic violence.
