Chief Technical Director, Comercio Cloud Computing Limited, Aderemi Adejumo, has said Nigeria in past years has remain one of the few countries in the world that heavily rely on importation of al its consumable items.

Adejumo made this comment recently in Lagos at an event organised to unveil Comercio Cloud Computing Limited partnership with Huawei.

He said, Comercio is the first enterprise cloud platform in Nigeria and we are trying to push the Cloud agenda in Nigeria for people to be aware as to how cloud can contribute to the business transformation in Nigeria.

“Cloud is a cost saving strategy for companies and for their technology. It’s a way of maintaining the same technology and more at a much lower cost than in house implementation of technology.

“Our aim is to set agenda and the foundation for people to be aware that we have that capability on ground as oppose to going out of the country when we have the same facility in Nigeria. Even from the economic point of view, we save on the capital flight, we are contributing to the food chain, we are spending on staffs in Nigeria, keeping the money in the country as oppose to pushing it out and growing others economy.

So, we are growing our economy, manpower, infrastructure. What I’m hoping to see is more local cloud company with a local infrastructure that can grow.

Cloud Computing is the future. 70 percent of CTO in the world are focusing on cloud computing as a cost saving and as way of improving their businesses so, that is a key thing to look out for. The first thing is to create the environment, the awareness, to let people understand what we’re talking about, how to move a business in house into the cloud so, by doing that, they’ll save a lot of money that will enable the company spend money on other things rather than having to spend more on the same thing.

Nigeria is a country of over 200 million people and it’s a huge shame that a lot of our businesses are going outside the country. So far, our focus in Nigeria has been on the elections so, there has been very little attention to the business sector; business is cricking, we are starved of funds.

So, we found out that a lot of people that are meant to sign up, are holding off, waiting until post inauguration and try to see if there will be turn around in the economy before they make any decision so, that is what we have from an economic point of view. People who are rarely affected by the economy situation are spending outside which doesn’t help the manpower, our local business, the country in term of taxes.

It’s a vast space when you talk about cloud computing, people can create their own local application. What we called Cloud Computing, is the ability to run an app in the cloud for people to be able to utilize them.

When I talk of enterprise, we are talking of small companies and SME’s but SMEs are like the biggest area but beyond that, there are other platforms, even Nollywood has platforms for movies to reside on so people can watch, peope can screen their music, all of these is off-shop. Because the MNO’s have the same price, whether you extract the data locally or extract it off-shop. If they had separated the price, so they have the local price and they have the foreign price.

You will find out that, that also will invigorate the market that it will encourage people to come looking. If we don’t grow our infrastructure in Nigeria, we are not going to grow as a country so. We are the seventh largest population in the world and we are going to move up be the third largest in 2050. So, the question we must ask is on what we are doing to support such a large population.

Nigeria has moved in over the last forty years to be a sole importer so, we cannot sustain our economy on importing because that pressure is on foreign exchange but if the 90 % of what we are doing is local like we find in the Chinese, that’s when we can grow our economy phenomenally, and we can grow our economy faster than even the western world. We must grow our local technology and there is a lot of local technology and it’s an ecosystem even within the technology space.

There is a lot in the news about Huawei but that’s on the telecom side, this is enterprise. Huawei as a firm has the highest investment in RMD so, they spend a lot pushing the boundary of the technology. From personality point of view, Huawei send their personnel to Nigeria. Their intellectual properties, their ability to solve problem, to train.

They are the only OEM that is doing that in Nigeria, the America OEM just come to sell their boxes without invest our people as the Chinese do. Hauwei is also cost effective; they are 50% cost of the American company in terms of what we are spending.

50%in cost of maintenance, so, for us as a growing company, it is wise to spend money on what is cost effective. They are very quick to respond to calls whenever there is any challenges and they said to us that our problem is their problems, and they work the talk. They also aggressively help train our personnel because that is one of the big problems.

The challenge in the business is that we don’t have skills. I’ve employed people based on personality and ability and we’ve trained them to understand and to be able to manage the cloud area and we have done that hand in hand with Huawei; we send at least three of our staff for free training with Huawei.

On his part, IT Solution Director, Huawei, Cai Qiong, said, “Huawei business fusion fare for this kind of self developed cloud OS. We are very competitive vendor in the Nigeria market and also, we already serve our customers and also our enterprise partners already using Huawei terminology.

On Huawei partnership with Commercio, he said, “we have been cooperating with them for almost two years. We have cooperation in this kind of infrastructure. They are very solidified about our service and in the past two years, we have had no issues. Our engineers are always on ground ready to support anytime, anyplace in Nigeria.

On the current Haiwei is facing and how the company is allying the fear of its customers in term of security, he said, “We need to ask our boss, but one thing I need to say is that, internally we are highly inspired, there is a word to answer this question “To succeed, you need a friend, but if you want to make a greater success you need an enemy”, that is my answer to this question.
