APC Finally Done with Obaseki, as Screening Committee Shows Him Way Out

Governor Godwin Obaseki

The Screening Committee of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has disqualified Edo State Governor, Godwin Obaseki, from contesting in the party’s governorship primary election scheduled for June 22, 2020.

The committee chairman, Prof. Jonathan Ayuba, made the disclosure in a press conference on Friday afternoon.

He stated that the governor’s Higher School Certificate (HSC) is defective.

Ayuba noted that the committee could also not ascertain the authenticity of his National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) discharge certificate.

According to the chairman, the name on the governor’s NYSC discharge certificate bears ‘Obasek’ instead of ‘Obaseki’.

He noted that while the committee accepted the possibility of the issuing authority making a mistake, Obaseki has not made any move to correct the error.

Ayuba said the committee, therefore, recommended that he is not eligible to contest in the party’s primary election.

National Chairman of the party, Adams Oshiomhole, thanked the committee for a job well done.

The party chairman urged any aggrieved aspirant to approach the appeal committee to register their grievances.

Also, Engr. Chris Ogiemwonyi and Hon. Matthew Iduoroyekemwen were not cleared to participate in the primary election.

Meanwhile, Dr. Pius Odubu, Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu and Hon. Osaro Obazee were cleared to contest for the party’s governorship ticket.

Earlier on Wednesday, Obaseki expressed fears that he might not get justice from the screening committee as Oshiomhole, “an interested party in Edo”, was involved in the process.

“Like I said, as a party man I had to go through the screening process but I do not believe that I will get justice because Comrade Adams Oshiomhole is an interested party in the Edo process,” the governor had said.

“One of the questions asked was why did I issue a gazette that will prevent the party from performing direct elections in Edo. That did I not see it as an anti-party activity?”

The former allies have been in a running battle for several months.

Meanwhile, Obaseki, has rejected the verdict of the screening committee of the All Progressives Congress (APC) on his disqualification from participating in the party primary election.

According to Channels Television, he described the committee’s verdict as “unjust, a show of shame, sinful, illegal and travesty of justice.”

The committee earlier on Friday afternoon recommended that he is not eligible to participate in the primaries. The committee said his HSC and NYSC certificate are defective.
